Weekend Plans 7/26 – 7/28

Happy Friday! This week was a whirlwind to say the least. I am pretty excited for some time to relax a little, try a new craft class, start a new book, and crochet. I need to share my patchwork blanket progress one day next week.

Anyway, here’s what I have planned for the weekend…

– Tomorrow I am taking a drop spindle class at my local yarn shop! I randomly decided to sign up this week and I can’t wait. This will be my first attempt at spinning yarn. I will definitely take lots of pictures and report back. Fingers crossed it goes well!

– After seeing Bri’s fun video of this book, Let’s Make Some Great Art, I decided to look it up on Amazon. I love to doodle and there are days when I miss my middle school art class. It was filled with sketching, shading, and lots of erasing…haha. I barely flipped through the first few pages but I can already tell it is awesome.

– I am working on some crafts and recipes for upcoming issues of Gathered!

– My photo shoot I had planned for this week was postponed to next week. No worries! Now I have a little extra time to work on a craft project that I want to use as a prop. I will share the project here on the blog when I am finished!

– I heard about Death Comes to Pemberley this week after discovering BBC is making a 3 episode mini-series based on the book. The cast looks awesome! I can’t wait. However, I’m not sure what to expect from this book. I mean, Pride and Prejudice is near and dear to my heart. I know it could never compare to Jane Austen but it might be a fun read. I just downloaded the sample so I will let you know how it goes. Have you read this book before?

I hope you have a great weekend! What are you up to? Have you tried spinning yarn before? Do you have any tips for me before my class tomorrow?

  1. Kristin says:

You will have so much fun in the spindle class! I started spinning with a spindle last fall, and then this spring I unexpectedly acquired a spinning wheel. I have to warn you…it’s a slippery slope. :) I’ve only been knitting for two years next month, then I fell into spinning, this spring I bought my first raw fleece, and I spent all of today dyeing yarn with Kool-Aid and mordanting some to dye naturally over the next few months. It’s so addicting! And the fact that you can take a handful of fluff and make yarn is still mind-boggling to me. :) As for tips, just relax and have fun and remember it’s called a “drop” spindle for a reason when you first start off. :)

I’ve been considering reading Death Comes to Pemberley, too. I’ve read P&P inspired books before, but they’ve mostly been in modern settings so I’m wary of reading an actual “sequel.” Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book, so I know what you mean.

  2. Hey Meredith,

I had a spinning teacher tell me once to embrace the spinning you do in the early days (as it is often “lumpy” and “overspun”) because once you have practiced a lot and gained control you never quite get that wonderfully unique and wild yarn.

Good luck. It is addictive :)

  3. Mari Gayle says:

Your weekend looks amazing! Good luck at the class tomorrow. Like anything, it takes practice. Don’t get frustrated. Of course, you’ll probably rock it on the first go!!

  4. Frances says:

Don’t worry about Pemberley. P.D. James also loves Jane Austen. Promise.

Happy weekend…please send good vibes to those of us who work on weekends. xo

  5. I hope you enjoy your class! I recently signed up for a sewing class and loved the heck out of our first session and can’t wait to learn/do more.

I look forward to what you think about Death Comes to Pemberley. I’ve heard some mixed reviews on it and so I’ve sort of pushed it off.

  6. CJ says:

Lovely photos as always. Hope you photo shoot goes well and that you really enjoy your weekend class. I’ve never tried it, but I’ll be interested to see how you get on.

  7. fenn says:

Ooh death comes to pemberley!! I’m an avid reader of Jane Austen and I’ve never really found parody books that great… I never found them very believable but I’ve heard fantastic things about this one, so I hope you enjoy it!!!

Have a fantastic time at the spinning class, very jealous!

  8. Hannapat says:

Wow spinning class sounds awesome. Looking forward to hearing about it. Not heard of the bbc series but off to have a look at the book now. Enjoy your weekend xo

  9. oklyous says:

Spinning sound great. that is also something I wanna learn/try some day!

Never heard about that specific book, but I have read several from the genre myself. With mixed opinions..but cool they are going to make a miniseries based on the book. Am totally going to watch that!

  10. Shannon G. says:

I ADORED that book!! I’m a big Jane Austen fan,and also a fan of mysteries, so I practically devoured it :) I’m excited to hear that a mini series is in the works! I hope you enjoy it as much as i did :)

  11. Maddy says:

That looks like a great read, will have to check it out! Good luck with the spinning class!

  12. Dichohecho says:

That sounds entertaining! Combining two things I like – Austen & murder mysteries :)
Have you come across Joan Aiken’s prequels & sequels? I’ve read some of her Mansfield Park ones – The Youngest Miss Ward, Mansfield Park Revisited – but there are more. So much to discover! I was at a loss after I finished all Austen’s books (before discovering Georgette Heyer) but these carry the world on a bit.
She was an excellent writer generally too, she wrote whole series of childrens’ books which I knew her for first. Arabel & Mortimer are probably the best known – stories of a little girl living in London and her pet raven. Definitely for a younger audience but really fun.

  13. little olive says:

    good book, you’ll enjoy it!

  14. So excited to hear (and see) about your spinning class!

  15. Whitney Hill says:

I just got my hands on a copy of “Death Comes To Pemberley” a few weeks ago and, while it’s been difficult to find time to really get into it, I’m enamored so far. The writing is wonderful and I’ve never liked a Pride and Prejudice sequel as much as this one – they just never really seem to get it right, y’know? I hope you’ll enjoy it!

    Greetings from Austin, TX!
