Cable Knit Socks Progress

This yarn color, Madelinetosh Merino Light in Maple Leaf, makes me so happy! The bright green just screams “spring”.

After finishing up my giant granny blanket (I plan on finally taking the finished pictures tomorrow! Finally.), I started searching for  a new personal project to keep my hands busy even busier than usual! 😉 At first I thought about trying this beautiful sock pattern from Spud & Cholë. To be honest, the knee-high length intimidated me a bit. An extra long pair of intricate cable socks would most likely cause me to fall ill of SSS (second sock syndrome). Instead I opted for this beautiful BFF sock pattern. My sock knitting experience is pretty basic so I am excited to learn new skills with this pattern. It is such a fun knit! The cable pattern is pretty simple and I love the look of the yarn’s color variations.

The yarn-in-a-teacup solution happened randomly. When my yarn ball kept rolling away from me, I spotted the teacup on the shelf, thought, “Hey, that looks about the same size as my yarn…”, put the yarn in the cup…problem solved! I will probably try to make a center pull ball next time, but for now this is working great!

The problem solving abilities of tea are endless.

I hope you are having a great week! How are your projects coming along? What are some of your favorite sock patterns?

  1. LOVE the colour, these are going to be adorable! I have a cardigan that kind of colour and I just wear it with everything I own. It seems to compliment all other colours and it makes me feel so happy and bright :)

I love the ball of wool in the teacup, this would make a great decoration for your house!

  3. Ms. Cee C says:

Such beautiful yarn! This is looking really great so far!

  4. I knit a hat with the same colour last fall. So pretty. :)

  5. Using a teacup is such a great idea! I’m between projects right now. Just finished a crocheted shawlette. Next up is a cabled wrap in a gorgeous, sparkly mohair blend.

  6. Your teacup looks much more stylish and picture worthy than my pasta pan holding my three balls of yarn!

ooooh, it’s looking gorgeous! good luck! i have a hard time with cookie a patterns, but i’ve loved her pomatomus pattern for a looooong time. recently, though, i’ve been daydreaming about casting on for some netherfield socks (so pretty!)

  10. The latest fad seems to be to put your yarn ball in a tea pot with the yarn coming out of the spout. You might try that.

  11. Michelle says:

I love your photos! I think my sister made something using that same colored yarn I think was a shawl or something.

  12. Such gorgeous yarn, it makes me so happy just looking at it! I love it for socks, I can’t wait to see what they look like when they’re done.

  13. Maddy says:

Such beautiful yarn! You are such a talented knitter. :) I haven’t attempted socks yet but they are on my to-knit list for sure.

  14. Patricia says:

The color is beautiful. The sock pattern that I like a lot is the business casual sock from tanis fibers.

  15. Stephanie says:

Great idea to use the teacup. I usually prefer not making center pull balls because they always end up tangling about 70% of the way into projects! Nice to have a cute solution to rolling balls.

  16. Ah, your gifs bring me so much joy!

  17. I love the color! It does scream Spring! And the pattern is absolutely gorgeous!

I have a heck of a long sock queue on ravelry. But the last two pairs I made were quite enjoyable: Simply Skyp Socks and Smaug Socks.

I’m looking forward to seeing how your socks turn out. The color looks great. Other than the color, I was wondering what inspired you to use Tosh Merino Light?

    • meredith says:

      Thanks for the pattern recommendations!

The color was a big reason why I picked this yarn! Also, I saw another knitter working on this pattern on Instagram and they were using this yarn in a yellow color. Very pretty.

  19. bekswhoknits says:

    That gif is just awesome.

I made a ‘yarn in a tea cup’ etsy board once. The two are very compatible.

Bravo for knitting socks… I’ve never knitted any before, and let’s just say it’ll probably be a while until I attempt them. :-)
Love your tea cup, too. TEA & KNITTING ftw.

  21. What a bright spot in my day! That green is amazing. Love the Pyrex teacup (I have cereal bowls with the same pattern — just in blue.)

  22. Meredith, the socks are gorgeous!! I love the color and of course the design; you can’t go wrong with Cookie A patterns 😉

  23. jen storer says:
